Maritime Evenings

All the “Maritime Evenings” will take place on Wednesdays in St Bridget’s Church, Rectory Road, West Kirby, starting at 7.30 pm

Admission on the door: £5 for adults and £2.50 for children.

8th September
Guardians of the Dawn

John Curry, retired Liverpool Pilot and Lifeboat Operations Manager at Hoylake, talks about his life on the River Mersey. In his time John piloted close on 6,000 ships, experienced calm seas and Shakespearian tempests and brushed with ships and masters from all over the world. Expect a varied and entertaining night of memories and experiences!

Proceeds in aid of St Bridget’s Community Centre Appeal and the Hoylake 1810 Lifeboat Disaster Memorial Fund

29th September
HMS Thetis

The submarine, HMS Thetis, built at Cammell Laird, set sail on sea trials in March 1939 but disaster struck on 1st June when the submarine sank with the loss of 99 lives. Derek Arnold, the son of the last man to escape from the submarine, talks about the tragedy.

3rd November
Lighthouses of Liverpool Bay

Diane Robinson and her husband, John, have, for many years, been researching the lighthouses of Liverpool Bay, controlled uniquely by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board rather than Trinity House - from Liverpool to Moelfre Bay on Anglesey including those on Wirral at such places as Hoylake, Leasowe and New Brighton. Diane will present a history and tales about the lights from their early days in the 1600’s to the present day.

Maritime Movie Memories

Angus Tilston, local history film maker of “Pleasures Past” and Swan Movie Makers, returns with another fascinating evening of movie memories focusing on the maritime theme.

Spilling the Beans:
A Humorous Account of Life in a London East End Parish

Lisa Wright is a Deacon in London, drama teacher and “one woman show”! When her father was a Minister in an East End parish, her mother wrote of the goings on in the parish to a correspondent in the USA. The letters survived and were returned to Lisa - come to hear the stories recounted in them!

Friday, 15th October
A History of Golf on the Wirral Supper Evening
with guest speaker, Joe Pinnington

Following our popular event last year, we return with another hot pot supper evening concluding with our guest speaker, Joe Pinnington. Joe, a keen local sportsman and local historian, formerly President of New Brighton Rugby Club and Captain of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, will give a light-hearted talk on golf and golfers on Wirral from the early years to the present day. Reserve a table for the evening, bring your friends and your own drinks.

Saturday, 16th October
Coffee Morning and Plant Sale

Good quality nursery-grown winter bedding plants for sale. A great way to keep your garden and patio cheerful over the winter. Combine this with a cup of coffee and buy a pot of chutney.

City of Chester Male Voice Choir

We welcome back the long-established City of Chester Male Voice Choir. The choir is renowned nationally and internationally and sing a rich and varied repertoire from religious to secular, traditional to modern and classical to popular music. We look forward to some rousing opera choruses, moving spirituals, numbers from the musicals and classics ranging from Cole Porter to Lennon and McCartney.

Tuesday, 16th November
Deeside Singers & St Bridget’s School Choir

The Deeside Singers, a long-established local group, combine with the St Bridget’s School Choir to provide an evening of music to suit all tastes - from folk to sea shanty, numbers from the shows to the Beatles, Church music and something a little unusual!!
